Meet the position

The BLS Lieutenant at Wakefield EMS serves as a frontline supervisor who supports the daily operations of Basic Life Support services under the direction of the BLS Coordinator. This position plays a key role in ensuring BLS crews are adequately staffed, equipped, and operating in accordance with agency protocols and expectations. The BLS Lieutenant provides real-time oversight to EMT personnel, assists with unit readiness checks, and may respond to calls to support scene management, documentation standards, or provider performance. They serve as a visible and approachable leader during shifts, promoting accountability and consistency across the BLS workforce.

In addition to field support, the BLS Lieutenant helps communicate operational priorities, relay provider concerns to the BLS Coordinator, and identify opportunities for system improvement. The role may include participation in training activities, skills refreshers, and onboarding of new EMTs, as well as assisting with quality assurance follow-ups and incident reviews. The BLS Lieutenant is expected to model professionalism, reinforce agency values, and help maintain a high standard of care and conduct among BLS personnel.
